Norfolk, Virginia's Joe Weatherly wins the
first NASCAR Grand National event contested at Nashville
Fairgrounds Speedway. Weatherly drove a 1958 Ford
campaigned by
Holman-Moody of Charlotte, North Carolina. The track was
repaved during 1958 and opened on July 19th. The cost of
modifications to the track was in excess of $200,000.
The 1958 Nashville 200 would be the first
win in Weatherly's storied career. He would go on to win
25 NASCAR Grand National events before his untimely death on
January 19, 1964 at Riverside International Raceway.
The race was contested between cars of the
NASCAR's Grand National Division and Convertible Division.
Early leader Rex White crashed into the
second turn wall on
lap 163. White had led for the first 116 laps of the race.
