Chevrolet driver Rex White captured the
second NASCAR Grand National event contested at Nashville Fairgrounds
Speedway. The Spartanburg, South Carolina driver led 40 laps of the 200 lap event.
For
the first time in history, all cars which started would finish
the race.
Junior Johnson led 12 laps before being
passed by White on lap 196. Johnson and his Ford would finish
on the lead lap in second place. He gambled on going the distance
without a pit stop but had to make a stop with five laps to
go. This gave White the chance to take the lead and win the
race.
Rex White captured his second consecutive
NASCAR Grand National pole at Fairgrounds Speedway. He
would go on to win three consecutive pole positions at the
track. During his career, White would win an impressive
five pole positions in six attempts (83%), which places him
third in the all-time track totals.
