Dick Hutcherson led all 200 laps of the race in his Holman - Moody Ford.  It was the second win of the season for the 33 year-old driver.

Ned Jarrett drove the Ford of Jabe Thomas after his own Ford was destroyed in a wreck on Interstate 40.  The van that was towing the Bondy Long Ford was caught-up in a severe thunderstorm near Harriman, Tennessee.  Jarrett was able to obtain the 1964 Ford of Virginia driver Jabe Thomas for the race.

The event was the first night race at the Fairgrounds for the Grand National Series

Wendell Scott scored a Fairgrounds Speedway career best finish of fourth at the event. During his storied career, Scott would compete in 12 events at the track.
