Dick Hutcherson led all 200 laps of the race in his Holman - Moody Ford.  It was the second win of the season for the 33 year-old driver.

Ned Jarrett drove the Ford of Jabe Thomas after his own Ford was destroyed in a wreck on Interstate 40.  The van that was towing the Bondy Long Ford was caught-up in a severe thunderstorm near Harriman, Tennessee. 

The event was the first Grand National series night race at the Fairgrounds.

Wendell Scott scored a Fairgrounds Speedway career best finish of fourth in the event. During his storied career, Scott would compete in 12 events at the track.
