The
1967 Nashville 400 top three qualifiers were Dick Hutcherson, Richard
Petty and Jim Paschal (at left). Paschal led 15 laps before his
1967 Plymouth was forced to retire with steering problems.
Hutcherson led for 22 laps before engine failure ended his day.
The race belonged to Richard Petty and his 1967 Petty Enterprises
Plymouth as he led 131 laps and won by a margin of five laps over second
place finisher James Hylton.The victory was
Petty's 5th at Fairgrounds Speedway, 17th of the 1967 season and 65th overall.
Second place went to Inman SC's James Hylton in
the former Cotton Owens Dodge. It was Hylton's second race at the
Fairgrounds, he would compete in 26 Grand National events at the track. Friday Hassler was in second
place when he blew his
engine on lap 363.

Richard Petty and James Hylton
Almost
forty years after the checkered flag fell on the 1967
Nashville 400, first place finisher Richard Petty would meet up
with the
race's second place finisher James Hylton. The legendary
duo was photographed at Martinsville Speedway on March 29, 2006,
before qualifying for the Goody's Cool Orange 500. Petty
was there with his Petty Enterprises driver Bobby Labonte, while Hylton was
there in support of EM Motorsport driver Tony Raines.
Petty and Hylton would also finish first
and second in both the 1967 NASCAR Grand National and the 1971
Winston Cup Grand National Driver standings.
