July 29, 1967 - 200 Miles - Purse $10,200

The 1967 Nashville 400 top three qualifiers were Dick Hutcherson, Richard Petty and Jim Paschal (at left).  Paschal led 15 laps before his 1967 Plymouth was forced to retire with steering problems.  Hutcherson led for 22 laps before engine failure ended his day.  The race belonged to Richard Petty and his 1967 Petty Enterprises Plymouth as he led 131 laps and won by a margin of five laps over second place finisher James Hylton.

The victory was Petty's 5th at Fairgrounds Speedway, 17th of the 1967 season and 65th overall.

Second place went to Inman SC's James Hylton in the former Cotton Owens Dodge. It was Hylton's second race at the Fairgrounds, he would compete in 26 Grand National events at the track. Friday Hassler was in second place when he blew his engine on lap 363.

Richard Petty and James Hylton

Almost forty years after the checkered flag fell on the 1967 Nashville 400, first place finisher Richard Petty would meet up with the race's second place finisher James Hylton.  The legendary duo was photographed at Martinsville Speedway on March 29, 2006, before qualifying for the Goody's Cool Orange 500.  Petty was there with his Petty Enterprises driver Bobby Labonte, while Hylton was there in support of EM Motorsport driver Tony Raines.

Petty and Hylton would also finish first and second in both the 1967 NASCAR Grand National and the 1971 Winston Cup Grand National Driver standings.
