Winner Cale Yarborough gets a kiss from Miss Winston BeBop Hobel in Nashville's victory lane. 

The Timmonsville, SC driver would lead 398 of the race's 420 laps

 

 Cale Yarborough won his fourth Winston Cup Grand National event at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.  The win was also the second consecutive win at the track for the South Carolina driver and the 34th win in his NASCAR Winston Cup career.

Yarborough stated "The only close call I had all night was when Lennie Pond spun in front of me."

Yarborough dominated the event by leading 398 of the race's 420 laps.

Veteran driver Jabe Thomas would make the last of his ten Fairgrounds Speedway starts.  His best finish at the track was a seventh place at the 1971 Nashville 420.

Buck Baker came out of semi-retirement in 1976 and competed at the Fairgrounds for the first time since 1967.

Local Fairgrounds legend Walter Wallace drove his Cunningham - Kelly Chevrolet to a 28th place finish.
 

The Music City 420 would also mark the initial Cup start of Columbia, Tennessee's Sterling Marlin. 

The 18 year-old second generation driver would go on to compete in 748 Winston Cup events, capturing 10 victories and earning $43,574,157 in prize money.
