Benny Parsons edged Cale Yarborough by one second to win the 1977
Music City 420. The margin was the closest in Nashville
Fairgrounds Speedway history.
Parsons pitted for four tires after a late race yellow flag
was brought out by a spin by Ford driver Ralph Jones. Yarborough
and his Junior Johnson Chevrolet elected to stay on the track to
maintain his lead position. Parsons, with fresher tires,
pashed Yarborough with 38 laps to go.
After the race,
Parsons would tell a reporter, "I was surprised Cale didn't pit.
We had run a pretty good distance and I knew my new tires would
stick better than his worn tires."
This
would be the last NASCAR Winston Cup race for Sweetwater, TN
native Paul Dean Holt. He competed in 85 events and
finished 18th in the 1968 point championship.
The race marked the fourth top-ten
finish for Jimmy Means. He would capture a career-best six
top-tens during the 1977 season.
This would be the last Nashville start
for veterans Earl Brooks and Dean Dalton. Brooks recorded
12 starts at the track while Dalton started 7 events.
