Darrell Waltrip captured a race that was plagued by scoring
errors. NASCAR officials blamed the tracks unique
configuration for the problems. Rather than the normal pit
road positioning, Nashville utilized the infield's quarter-mile
track as a pit. This caused cars pitting to
pass the scorer's stand twice during a lap.
This would the last NASCAR Winston Cup
Grand National appearance by Henley Gray (pictured at right in
the 19 car). The Rome, GA
native recorded 374 starts in a career that begin in 1964.
Gray's best career finish came at the track in 1966, when he
placed fourth in the Nashville 400.
Hometown favorite David Sisco would
record the last of his 12 starts at the track. He best
finish was two third places (73 Nashville 420 and 74
Nashville 420). The week after the Nashville race, his mother would be killed
in a tragic accident in the infield at Talladega. As a
result, Sisco
would end his Winston Cup career.
Janet Guthrie became the
only female diver in NASCAR Winston Cup history to compete at
Nashville. Two weeks later she would capture an impressive
sixth place finish at Bristol's Volunteer 500.
