July 14, 1979 - 250 Miles - Purse $69,205

Second generation driver Ronnie Thomas completes his qualifying attempt for the Nashville 420.

Darrell Waltrip captured his third Winston Cup win at Nashville by a one-lap margin over Cale Yarborough.

Chevrolets captured the first ten positions.

Sterling Marlin led 11 laps during the race. He would lead 4,298 laps during his 33 year NASCAR career.

This was the first Winston Cup start at Nashville for Terry Labonte and Harry Gant.  Both Labonte and Gant would compete in 12 events at the track.

The race would mark the only career Winston Cup start for Memphis, Indiana's Jimmy Hindman.

The DiGard Chevrolet of Darrell Waltrip is given final adjustments prior to qualifying for the 1979 Busch Nashville 420.  The DiGard Chevrolet would both sit on the pole and win the race.
