July 14, 1984 - 250 Miles - Purse $169,610

Geoff Bodine in victory lane after his thrilling victory in the Pepsi Nashville 420.

Geoff Bodine bested Darrell Waltrip by one car length to win the Pepsi Nashville 420.  This was the Chemung, New York native's second career win. Waltrip had captured 8 of the last 19 races contested at Fairgrounds Speedway.

Bodine led all but one of the final 122 laps on the .596-mile oval. "The crew had the car right," said Bodine. "All I had to do was drive it and keep it between the fences.  They are the ones who deserve credit for this win tonight."

The race set a track attendance record with 24,150 fans packed into the grandstands.

Sadly, the Pepsi Nashville 420 would be the last NASCAR Winston Cup race contested at the historic track.  In 1983, California multi-millionaire businessman Warner Hodgdon gained 100% control of both Fairgrounds Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway via highly leveraged purchases.

Hodgdon's company's National Engineering would be caught up in bid-rigging scandal which would lead to a $33 million dollar lawsuit. On January 15, 1985, Hodgdon filed for bankruptcy in Federal Court.

The two Nashville races would be pulled from the 1985 NASCAR Winston Cup schedule.
